In February 2022, Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which is now the largest and bloodiest war that Europe has seen since World War II concluded in 1945. This talk will discuss the motives of Vladimir Putin and the Kremlin for this war of choice, the course of the conflict thus far and key Kremlin miscalculations. It will also look at U.S. policy and how the war might proceed in the future as well as some future implications for Ukraine and Russia.

About Steven Pifer
Steven Pifer, former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine, retired from the Foreign Service after more than 25 years of service. His work focused on Russia, Ukraine, nuclear arms control, and European security.
His long involvement with the Department of State included a variety of assignments as deputy assistant secretary; special assistant to the President; and senior director for Russia, Ukraine and Eurasia on the National Security Council. He also served at the U.S. embassies in Warsaw, Moscow and London as well as with the U.S. delegation to the negotiation on intermediate-range nuclear forces in Geneva.
Mr. Pifer is currently affiliated with the Center for International Security and Cooperation at Stanford and a nonresident senior fellow with the Brookings Institution. He is author of The Eagle and the Trident: U.S.-Ukraine Relations in Turbulent Times.
