About this Program
Millions of people desperately want to enter this country and are willing to make great sacrifices to get here. Are they persecuted people fleeing gangs? Desperate refugees seeking a better life? Criminals on the run? Potential soldiers for US drug cartels? A mix of all of the above and more?
How broken is our immigration system and its policies?
On April 4th, Alex M. Saragoza, UC Berkeley professor emeritus, writer and lecturer, will bring us up close to these and other important questions in The Southern Border Crisis: Its Meaning and Possible Future.
With often contradictory reports coming at us, the program will strive for clarity on this top-of-the-news issue.

About Our Speaker
Alex M. Saragoza is Professor Emeritus at UC Berkeley, where he has served a number of directorships: for the Center for Latin American Studies; for International Programs; and for the UC Center at Mexico’s National University in Mexico City.
A graduate of Fresno State, Harvard, and the UC San Diego, he has published and lectured widely on Mexico, immigration, and the history of the Mexican population of the U.S.
Professor Saragoza was the recipient of the 2017 Excellence in Teaching and Learning Award from the Osher Life-Learning Institute at UC Berkeley. And he has been selected to the Distinguished Lecturer Program of the Organization of American Historians.
Alex Saragoza has spoken to our group several times in the past and for good reason. He is both very thoughtful in his remarks and a very good speaker. We are lucky to have him join us again.
