About the Program

In recent years, many powerful forces -- the pandemic among them -- have changed how we receive news. Along the way, news gathering at local, national and international levels also changed -- with journalists working remotely and many being forced to change their beats.

Enter our own award-winning Press Democrat. With The Press Democrat and the US Media Landscape, PD Executive Editor Chris Fusco takes us inside the newsroom for an up-close look at the state of the news industry and how our hometown daily adapts in real time and delivers the goods. Two key forces of particular concern are the rise of “fake news” and artificial intelligence.

Fusco will also provide insights into how the PD is moving into the digital age while still serving readers wedded to traditional paper and ink.

About Chris Fusco

A Chicago native, Chris Fusco cut his teeth at multiple Illinois papers before landing at the Chicago Sun-Times in 2000. There, his stories won more than a dozen local and several national honors, including a George Polk Award for local reporting.

His top reporting memories include being in the Bulls’ locker room during the 1997 NBA Finals; covering Barack Obama’s fundraising efforts during the 2008 presidential campaign; and chronicling Rod Blagojevich’s road from the Illinois governor’s mansion to federal prison.

Fusco became the top Sun-Times editor in 2017. He subsequently served as managing editor of the Houston Chronicle, the largest news organization in Texas.

In 2020, Fusco came to California to help launch Lookout Local, a digital news startup, before taking the helm of The Press Democrat in January of this year.

We are excited to feature PD Editor Chris Fusco on August 1, to speak on the many challenges of contemporary journalism.
