Climate change – a worry, a crisis, a scourge?
What to do about it?
About the Program
In February, The World Affairs Council of Sonoma County presents Dakota Gruener, CEO of Reflective, to share an insider’s view of a fascinating possible climate intervention with: Fighting Global Warming – The Case for Urgent Research on Sunlight Reflection.
Dakota Gruener launched Reflective, a non-profit research organization, with Cornell University professor Doug MacMartin. Their mission: Equipping the world with the data and tools needed to make informed decisions about sunlight reflection (SRM).
This idea – part radical concept, part utter common sense -- involves potentially reflecting a small amount of incoming sunlight away from planet earth, mimicking what happens naturally after a volcanic eruption.
Dakota Gruener will explore the rationale for sunlight reflection, the very legitimate concerns and risks posed by this research, and what it will take to make informed decisions, fast enough to matter. She will also describe how Reflective intends to fund academic research, make it more inclusive and available, and provide governments with the data needed to evaluate SRM.
The goal: meet reluctance head on and open minds to new solutions in our fight to save the planet.
And she looks forward to taking your questions.
About Our Speaker
A graduate of Brown University, Dakota Gruener worked in global health policy, consulting for the Gates Foundation on vaccine supply security, and then for the CEO of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance.
Dakota then led ID2020, a standards-setting organization for privacy-protecting digital ID. In 2018, while working closely with both the United Nations High Commission on Refuges and the Government of Bangladesh to implement digital ID systems that would work for displaced populations forced to flee across international borders, it became painfully apparent to her that climate change would be the most significant driver of human thriving – or suffering – in the coming decades.
Dakota founded Reflective after recognizing that, even as we cut emissions and scale up carbon removal, we’re facing a world with many potentially devastating climate impacts in the next few decades. We now have no choice but to seriously, and urgently, consider seemingly radical proposals to cool the planet.
